Indonesia rocked by 7.1 magnitude earthquake

A massive earthquake has rocked Bali after originating in the Java Sea on Tuesday morning.

The 7.1 magnitude quake rocked Indonesia about 5.55am AEST.

It occurred north-east of Denpasar, at a depth of 514km depth, according to Geoscience Australia.

There is currently no tsunami threat to Australia, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

A man in Bali claimed his hotel was “swaying” during what was described as a minutes-long shake on social media.

“Hey, everyone. Woke up at 4am here in Bali with hotel swaying. Earthquake. Just posting to say my daughter and I are safe. Prayers for anyone affected by this event,” one traveller tweeted.

“Stay safe semeton (brothers and sisters in) Bali, I’m really afraid there will be follow-ups,” one Javanese man tweeted.

Former WA commissioner to Indonesia Ross Taylor tweeted: “Our villa in Seminyak was shaking for around two minutes. Really frightening.”

“Earthquake felt like one minute long shake. About 30 seconds in, it felt like it was calming down then seemed to ramp up again and shake more,” another wrote.
